Foundation & Origins
- Rabat was founded in the 12th century (1150 CE) by the Almohad ruler Abd al‑Mu’min, who established a fortified ribat (military camp) on the Atlantic coast.
- It became a strategic base for launching campaigns into al‑Andalus (Spain).
- Later dynasties expanded Rabat, but it remained secondary until the 20th century, when the French Protectorate (1912–1956) chose it as the administrative capital.
- After independence in 1956, Rabat was confirmed as the official capital of Morocco.
